A New Look at the Wash 'N Go Fro

So after wearing my box braids for about a month, I was not feeling too excited about parting my hair for a new set of braids or twists.

Nekea encouraged me to try the wash and go 'fro. My first time around with loose hair, before locing, I never liked my wash and go 'fro mostly because I thought it wasn't shaped right. I thought my hairline looked funny. I didn't like the look of a perfectly even short 'fro on me.

At the same time, I do love simple styles and what could be more simple than wearing my hair "as is" after washing? It was definitely worth a try. So, I finally took all of my braids out - it took me about a week. I twisted them as I unbraided so I wouldn't look too crazy. They were fairly small and very tight so I used a rat tail comb to pick them out and combed through with Kinky Curly Knot Today detangler.

On wash day, I removed all the twists, cowashed my hair with Suave Tropical Coconut conditioner and rinsed thoroughly. My hair stayed pretty stretched throughout the process from being in the braids for so long and because I had combed through each braid when I was taking them down. I took Nekea's advice and rinsed the front in the sink to make my hair go forward in the front. I could have probably done this in the shower but I forgot.

With my hair sopping wet, I applied Kinky Curly Knot Today. I "scrunched" it a bit without being too heavy handed. After a few minutes I applied the Kinky Curly Curling Custard.

Still pretty wet at this point. Click to enlarge.

About two hours later...still damp.

Close up...texturiffic.

This is how it looked about three (more) hours later, just about completely dry.

Another dry closeup...

Beware of the buildup. I'm not sure if I was too heavy handed with the products or didn't wash all the conditioner out. Either way watch out for that. White clumps of product are not attractive. ;-)

The verdict - I love the texture, the shape, the moisture and shine. I think the style fits my style. The wash 'n go fro is a success! I will be wearing it for another week...Thanks Nekea!

Update: Advice from Kinky-Curly Creator

"To avoid the white buildup just make sure your hair is pretty wet before applying...you can even do it in the shower if you like."

I'm loving the freedom of this to. I have found that you get more of a pattern (for non pattern people) when you wash after having twists or braids in.

Do you have any before pictures? As in immediately before you out the products in your hair. If you post them it will be nice so that some who wants to try the style can compare. Thanks.

Hi there!

Thanks so much for the encouragement. I have recently gone natural for my third time (I know, make up your mind!) and really appreciate your support. I will continue to go to your site for tips and positive energy. My texture is very similar to yours, and maybe even a little bit thicker. Your explicit instructions are SOOOO helpful. How can I join this group? How long is your hair now? Peace and blessings to you and all! Bye!

I think that the style suits you 100%. It looks awesome. This product tops my list for reliable fabulous results all the time with a product that is actually good for your hair.

A tip: To make sure you don't get buildup clumps/apply too much just after you apply the product wash your hands and dry them completely then run them back through your hair to pick up extra product.

goodnaps, thanks!

anonymous #1, washing after twists or braids is much less tangled which seems to give more room for the hair texture to show. washing after detangling has a similar effect.

Hi!

Your pics look great! I just came across this blog and I have a question. When you put in the curling custard, did you do the two strand twist or did you just "scrunch" it through your hair? I just bought a jar and it's not giving me the effect I want when I do the two strand twist. It curls really nicely but when I unravel the twist, I find I don't know how to style it. Anyway, I was wondering how you applied it.

Cheers!

Hi SexyWife, thanks! When I put in the Curling Custard I scrunch really gently with my fingertips. I never tried it on twists. Hope this helps, good luck!
