My friend Tony doesn't maintain his locs. It's been done 3 or 4 times in the past 6 or 7 years since he's had them, and I think I'm being generous. Because of this, he has experienced dryness, damage, and lost a few locs.
Tony maintains that he likes his locs as they are; he wants freeform locs with their own personality and he has certainly achieved that.
Though I am all for the freeform-ish look a la Bob Marley or Lauryn Hill, I'm convinced that if some repair isn't done on his locs, the damage will get worse until they all fall out.
So I decided to help a brotha out, so to speak. I used Jamaican Mango & Lime Resistant Formula Loc Gel and a spray bottle filled with water to moisten the unlocked hair at the root. I used my fingers to twist the hair and rolled each loc into a bantu knot to dry. I finished with a good spritz of a water and oil mix, and moisturized the scalp with Wild Growth Oil.
After I removed the bantu knots, Tony looked like a loced Al Sharpton!
He wasn't too into that, lol, so we went with a neat ponytail pulled back with an elastic band.
His hair also wasn't completely dry so I wanted the locs to be held down until they were.

Yeah, I've gotta ask...what's up with the chocolate milk sign in the background of the last pic? Do you collect those? It reminded me of something I saw recently: http://www.ferris.edu/jimcrow/
As for the locks, you brought them "up to speed" without causing him to lose the look he wanted. Good job on them!
Hi Brandee, you're very observant! At one time I had a fair collection of Black memorabilia. I've given most of it away, but I still have a few pieces and the "Chocolate Eyes Drinks" promotional fan is one of them.
About the loc maintenance, thanks!
Wow, those look great, i bet they will look magnificent in a couple years times once they join together. It looks wonderful, without losing it's original purpose :)
Thanks anon!
Wow...you did a really good job! He looks really handsome with that nice, neat ponytail.
