Thirst Quenching Juice for your Hair

So I went in the post office a couple of weeks ago, and the guy behind the counter (who I've never met or seen before) says, "Two questions: How can I help you? And what is that scent you're wearing?"

I started to say I'm not wearing a scent, but then remembered, "Uh...rosemary and grapefruit."

He looked puzzled for a minute, and replied, "Is that your perfume, or you had it for breakfast?"

I laughed. "It's in my hair."

Another slightly confused look. "So, you really do use juices and berries in your hair?"

More laughing. "Something like that."

He seemed pretty happy with that answer.

These are the interesting conversations homemade hair potions can stir up. I have once again been wearing my wash/rinse and go fro for a few months. When it's wet, I spritz on my latest concoction: tap water, castor oil, vegetable glycerin, and a few drops each of grapefruit and rosemary essential oils. Then I shape it a bit with my fingers. It works wonders for my hair, which can be on the dry side if left to its own devices. Try it, let me know how it works for you.

I need to see pictures!!! I am currently in the stage of growing out my big chop..And just this morning I searched your blog to get more info on your wash/rinse and go fro. I use the Curling Custard, but my question is do i also have to use the Knot Today? Also should I get my hair trimmed during this process?? Thanks again for the blog and for your help

Hi drrph,

Check out the pictures here.

I like to use the Knot Today alone or underneath the Curling Custard. The directions on the Kinky Curly bottle recommend that and it seems to work for me.

I trim my hair periodically, which helps reduce tangling and split ends. It also keeps my hair softer.

Hope this helps.

Your concoction sounds...well...delicious! :-)

I have locs, so maybe I can use those scents in a spritz or something. How much of each EO do you use?

Hi Tasha,

I used a similar mix when I had locs. I dilute the oil and glycerin a lot with water. If I had to come up with measurements, I'd say about 3 tablespoons of veggie glycerin, 2.5 tablespoons of castor oil, 10 drops of grapefruit essential oil, and 8 drops of rosemary essential oil in 8 ounces of water. I really do just eyeball it though.

HTH.

Hi Kaya,

Glad I stumbled onto your blog! I must tell you about something I am using on my hair, which, btw, is at least as thick as yours appears. (If I pull a strand out, it's so curly it forms a perfect "o".)
I've started using avocado oil on my hair. I used about three nickel-sized amounts on my entire head and it was moisturized enough for TWO days (i washed it after that). Probably could have kept it in longer. I could actually pic it while *dry*. (Although I don't do that regularly -- the chance of breakage is too high.) The nice thing is, it didn't feel oily, just soft.

I've used jojoba (which I like), and many other concoctions, but so far I like avocado the best. And, no, it doesn't smell like guacamole. It doesn't smell much at all.

hey kaya,
I have been using your mixture for four days now. It works great!! My is so soft! I spray my leave-in and spritz; the spritz helps my stumburn hair obsorb moister. This has been great in the Tennessee humidity!! Thanks alot!!

Hi Kaya,

So i know im really late with seeing this post and I hope you still check your comments, but I just tried to make your concoction and it seems like everything floats to the top (almost immediately after shaking). Is it supposed to be like that, or did I do something wrong?

hi brw, thanks for the avocado oil tip. that's one of the oils i haven't tried yet.

artchick07, i'm very glad the mixture is working well for you! that's always great to hear.

ashley, i would try adding more oil and/or glycerin and shaking more vigorously before spritzing. separation is normal but it shouldn't happen immediately.
